Pioneer Day in Historic Lochapoka

Step back in time without crossing the county line this Saturday, October 29, at Pioneer Day in Historic Loachapoka.

Five miles west of Auburn down Highway 14, the quaint Loachapoka community flanks either side of the roadway and railroad tracks with historic structures that echo the past and existing businesses that mark the town’s modern-day relevance.

This Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Pioneer Day (formerly known as the Syrup Sopping & Historical Fair) returns to the Loachapoka community. The event is an annual tradition that attracts visitors from all over Lee County and beyond, and it has been hosted at the same location—Loachapoka’s Pioneer Park—for the past 30 years.

The nine-hour-long festival features a slew of demonstrations, unique vendors and musical entertainment using hammered and mountain dulcimers, banjos and guitars. A few specific activities that you can look forward to include:

  • Weaving and cloth-making demonstrations
  • Mules grinding cane
  • Syrup making
  • Native American dancing
  • Bread making
  • Soap making
  • Pottery demonstrations
  • Outdoor cooking
  • Blacksmith demonstrations
  • Children’s activities

Guests will also have the opportunity to tour the two-story, 140-year-old Trade Center Museum, visit the park’s log cabin and walk through herb and crops gardens.

Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat while you’re there. Pioneer Day’s famous sweet potato biscuits are made on-site in addition to camp stew, beans, collards, barbecue and more.

This event is free to the public! If you have never experienced this showing of local and historic culture, plan to attend Pioneer Day this Saturday!
