EAMC offers robotic surgeries

Patients of East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) now have access to the newest and most advanced robotic technology for several surgical needs. Designed to enhance precision and control, EAMC offers robotic surgeries with the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 robotic system.

About the new da Vinci 5 system

Building upon the previous da Vinci Xi system, the da Vinci 5 features 150 design innovations and enhanced computing power. It is a robotic surgical system created for use during minimally invasive procedures. These procedures usually involve incisions that are one to two centimeters long, requiring only one or two stitches or a small bandage dressing.

Key features of this machine include force feedback sensors, improved ergonomics, advanced data analytics and more. But what exactly is all that? Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Force feedback sensors: Sense the force exerted during surgery, providing a more tactile and natural feel for more precise movements and reducing tissue trauma.
  • Enhanced surgeon control: This system offers AI feedback systems and redesigned surgeon controllers with tremor and vibration control.
  • Improved ergonomics: Addresses surgical ergonomics, reducing the usual strain on surgeons’ backs and necks, allowing them to sit more comfortably and reduce fatigue.
  • Advanced data analytics: This system provides insights into surgical performance to improve outcomes and surgical success.
  • Streamlined workflow: Incorporating more than 10,000 times the computing power of its predecessor and offers a more streamlined workflow in the operating room.
  • 3-D quality imaging: Featuring a high-resolution 3D imaging system, this system provides surgeons with a clearer and more detailed and precise view.

Since EAMC offers robotic surgeries with the da Vinci 5, patients will benefit from smaller incisions, reduced scarring, less blood loss and quicker recovery times.

Robotic surgeries at EAMC

East Alabama Medical Center is the third hospital in the state to acquire this new technology and successfully used the equipment in its first procedure on Monday, June 16.

President and CEO of East Alabama Health Laura Grill stated, “This new da Vinci system renews our commitment to ensuring our surgeons are equipped with the tools needed to continue delivering world-class care.”

Although it is news that EAMC offers robotic surgeries, it is not a new thing for this pioneering medical center. Providing general, gynecologic and urologic robotic procedures—four surgeons practicing at EAMC have completed more than 1,000 robotic-assisted procedures. Moreover, in 2023, EAMC earned accreditation as a robotic Surgery Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation.
