the Opelika Fire Department is growing

News that the Opelika Fire Department is growing in more ways than one recently hit the press. What’s more, the fire department has an extra special reason to look back and appreciate how far it’s come.

What’s happening at the Opelika Fire Department?

Along with news that the Opelika Fire Department is growing comes news of an exciting investment and addition to the fleet. The Opelika Fire Department added what’s known as “an aerial” to its fleet of fire trucks.

This state-of-the-art fire truck is the first of four that are set to arrive this year. It is a multi-purpose truck featuring a pump, a water hose, a water tank, ground ladders and an aerial device. Best of all, the new fire truck was customized specifically by and for the Opelika Fire Department!

The fire department formed a special committee that included the firefighters who use the truck the most. In the end, they came up with innovative design ideas, including integrated wireless headsets and battery-powered tools.

More Opelika Fire Department updates

In addition to the new fire truck, the Opelika Fire Department is growing thanks to the construction of a new fire station! Station 5 is under construction just off Gateway Drive, near Southview Primary School.

The future fire station is expected to open later this year. Once complete, the new station will help improve response times with quicker access to the Tiger Town area and Interstate 85.

Celebrating 150 years

What could be better than a brand-new high-tech fire truck and an upcoming new station? A long and proud history! In fact, the Opelika Fire Department celebrates 150 years of service this year. What began with a meeting of Opelika residents in February 1873 resulted in the formation of the Opelika Fire Company in September 1873.

More news on ways to celebrate the department’s 150th anniversary will be shared throughout the year. Connect with the Opelika Fire Department on Facebook and Instagram, plus the City of Opelika on Facebook and Instagram, to stay in the loop.
