It’s looking like a skate park will be in the cities of Auburn and Opelika’s near future, with two recent public forums having been hosted by the partnered municipalities. This news is excellent for youth looking for healthy, active entertainment in the city. The plans for a new skate park are still underway, but Auburn and Opelika are looking forward to hearing from an interested public.

Gathering public interest

This past June 26 and 27 saw two public meetings with two different skate park builders hired by the municipalities to provide park designs. On the 26, interested parties got to meet with American Ramp Company at the Opelika Sportsplex; on the 27, the public met with Spohn Ranch Skateparks at the Harris Center.

Both companies requested input on what the community members desired in a skatepark. Those unable to attend either meetings were requested by Spohn Ranch Skateparks to fill out an online survey.

Once Spohn Ranch and American Ramp return to the cities with designs, planners will set a timeline for the new skate park.

Partnered cities for the greater good

The cities of Auburn and Opelika are going in half-and-half with a budget of $400,000 for the new skate park. Should plans pan out as expected, construction for the skate park will take place at the old tennis courts at Auburn’s Indian Pines Golf Course.

Josh Loveland is particularly excited about the new skate park. Loveland owns the Pop Love-It Skate Shop in Auburn and is an advocate for the local skating community. Loveland looks forward to a legal, designated space for youth to hang out without fear of getting run off. As Loveland sees it, the most important aspect of the park is that it “will be a safe place for younger kids … who otherwise would just be kind of out on the street.”
